Mishka

Project Description

Composer: Christian Tschuggnall

With this piece I basically turned a dog into music. I wrote it for my masters degree in composition at the UdK Berlin. My goal was to find a different and unusual approach on treating and developing musical ideas. Sometimes it can be especially interesting to get inspiration from even non-musical sources.

The „cell“ for the composition stems from a video-transcription of the „talking husky dog Mishka“, which can be heard howling, sniffing and interacting with it’s owner here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v650l7ZOOIQ).

I transcribed the precise pitches of the dog and used it as the main material for the composition. I ended up getting all the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic ideas out of this single transcription.
