#klangberlins: Tempelhof

Project Description

Composers: Michael Edwards & Christian Tschuggnall
The key to unlocking the sound of an abandoned airport was noticing how closely the sound of a pencil on paper is to the sound of a skateboard on concrete.  Instead of having the musicians draw, we decided to incorporate the conductor as performer had have him write out the first notes of a well known piece.  We initially looked for something in a sharp key because sharps can be drawn with more intent and sound than flats.  However in the end we decided to use the well known motif of Beethoven’s 5th symphony.  It’s in C minor and has 3 flats.  We practiced drawing the flats in 3 distinct strokes because we thought Ludwig probably wound appreciate it if we transposed the whole symphony up a semitone. ????
